Surfing is one of those things that I really want to learn how to do. I would be totally OK to do it if it was acceptable to wear a helmet. Somewhere in my lifetime I must have seen a movie or TV show where someone falls off their surfboard and gets hit in the back of the head with it and subsequently knocked out. That is my big fear, not sharks, not looking like a fool, not suit falling off, not even drowning. Someday I hope I will be brave enough (which really means someone else wants to learn with me) to learn how to surf. In the meantime, I’ll leave it to the pros.
The Belmar Pro Surfing Competition will be held at the 16th Avenue Beach, September 17-19, 2010 in Belmar, NJ. The event is sponsored by Foster’s, as in “Australian For Beer”. Some events happened over this past weekend and the best is yet to come. On Wednesday, September 15th there will be a Surfboard Art Show at 10th Avenue Burrito where there will be live music, great food and artist signings. The fun starts at 7:00pm. Following that on September 16th is the Foster’s Party at 8:00pm at Connolly Station on Main Street in Belmar where there will be live entertainment. Friday the 17th from 11:00am to 5:00pm the NJ Bloodmobile Blood Drive will be in front of Eastern Lines. Then at 9:00pm, McCann’s will host the Foster’s B Pro Reggae Party. Live music throughout the day on Saturday the 18th and then the day is topped off with the Foster’s Belmar Pro Party at PK Shamrocks on 18th Avenue in Belmar. The competition ends Sunday afternoon but there will again be live music through the day. For the full events schedule and further details click here.
Even beyond Labor Day, there’s one more great event at the Jersey Shore. The sponsors invite the spectators to become a part of the action. In recent years, those who can’t be at the beach for the full three days have followed along on the web and our social networking outlets. Mayor Pringle and the Town of Belmar welcome you and your family to pull up a chair. Enjoy the contest, the demos, the music, and art and everything this annual event and the town of Belmar have to offer. – Belmar Pro Website
Have you learned to surf? Where did you learn? Have you tried it and not liked it? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments below.
Update: 9/20/10 If you want to see some excellent photos of the event be sure to visit Scott Miller’s “Jersey Shore Tog” Blog here at: http://jerseyshoretog.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/fosters-belmar-pro/ One of my favorite pics is the surf boards lined up. Great work Scott!
